A baby of 400 grams

Pregnancy is not only physically difficult for many mothers, it is emotionally and psychologically challenging. Can a woman who could not get pregnant because of polycystic ovary syndrome have a baby? That's what happened to this woman who got pregnant unexpectedly.

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common health problem caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. Hormonal imbalance creates problems in the ovaries. With PCOS, the egg produced by the ovaries may not develop properly or may not be released during ovulation as it should.

PCOS can cause irregular rules or even a lack of rules. Irregular periods can lead to:

Infertility (inability to get pregnant). In fact, PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility.

Development of cysts that are small sacs filled with fluid in the ovaries.
A woman who suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome is usually very unlikely to become pregnant, but Ashley Zachmeyer has been able to do so and the story of her baby is amazing!

An amazing pregnancy
After being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that led to infertility, Ashley Zachmeyer never imagined she would fall pregnant one day.

One day, while the doctors were doing Ashley's exam to find a cyst after several negative pregnancy tests, they discovered that Ashley already had a baby and was already seven weeks old.

The fetus had 3 weeks of growth retardation and had very little amniotic fluid (biological fluid contained in the amniotic sac and which bathes the fetus). At that time, you had to see a high-risk pregnancy specialist.

The first specialist Ashley saw claimed that the baby had less than a 20% chance of survival. Ashley was devastated listening to the doctor's diagnosis.

Ashley could have a second opinion, and the specialist told him there were signs of miscarriage. At 26 weeks, Ashley was informed that blood circulation in the umbilical cord was compromised and that she would likely miscarry within the next 24 hours.

At that time, Ashley said she had felt a strength she never had before. The doctors told her she had a choice, either to do everything in their power to save her, or to see how things would evolve. Ashley then chose that they do everything they can.

The little baby is born
On June 22, 2017, at 29 weeks, Ashley gave birth to her daughter Adalee. She weighed only 400 grams. She was the size of a 22-week-old fetus. The doctors followed Ashley's wishes and did everything in their power to help her stay alive.

At the age of 4 days, Adalee was transferred to Atlanta Children's Healthcare. It was one of the scariest days for Ashley. She had never thought of seeing so many wires and tubes attached to her little girl.

After three weeks, Ashley was able to embrace her for the first time. "It was the best feeling in the world when we finally did it. Ashley said. The doctors told this mom that it was rare to see a baby born so small but had no complications in addition to growing up. Adalee's doctor called her the superstar.

At 3 months, Adalee no longer needed respiratory support. She was breathing completely alone. Both parents were still waiting for her to gain enough weight to go home. She received her diet and milk in a feeding tube until she was able to drink a bottle for the first time after 3 months.

After 106 days in the hospital, the parents were finally able to bring Adalee home. The little girl weighed 2 kilos but she was better. After a year Adalee weighed 5.5 kg. It was not tied to any device and no surgery was needed. All his doctors were very impressed by his progress.

"Our little girl of 400 grams, with less than 20% chance of survival, has survived. Although she is small, she is strong. Ashley said.

What an incredible testimony of strength and courage on the part of the parents and of course, the little Adalee! Ashley followed her heart and finally was able to welcome her adorable little baby!
