11-Year-Old Texas Boy Invents A Device To Prevent Children From Dying In Hot Cars

Sometimes parents leave their child alone in a car while running or loading luggage, but the reality is that it can be very dangerous. On average, 40 to 50 children die each year in the United States after being left behind or forgotten in a vehicle. The cause of death ? The heat !

The danger of leaving a child alone in a car

The temperature inside a car in hot weather, even with windows down an inch, can quickly rise above 45 ° C. Even during a relatively mild day, the temperature inside a car can quickly exceed 35 °. Such temperatures pose a high risk of heat stroke to children, which can lead to high fever, dehydration, seizures, stroke and, ultimately, death.

You may think that the chances of this happening to your child are very unlikely, but in reality, this can happen to anyone at any time. He is never sure to leave his child alone in a car.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has published cases, from the death certificates of 804 children who have died in hot cars since 1994. In about 55% of cases, the parent did not know that the child was in the vehicle.

However, these tragic deaths can now be averted thanks to a 10-year-old boy named Bishop Curry from McKinney, Texas, who invented a great device!

The Oasis device

The little boy Bishop had the idea to invent a device he called Oasis. The latter can be attached to a headrest or car seat, and its purpose is to feel if a child is left alone in the car while simultaneously monitoring the temperature inside the vehicle. Once the temperature reaches a certain level, the unit vents cold air while alerting parents and authorities.

Bishop had this idea after his 6-month-old neighbor's daughter died after being left in an overheated car. Initially, he had made a model of the Oasis device in 3D clay with the hope of having enough money to make the real product one day.

Since then, he and his father have raised $ 50,292 for a $ 20,000 goal on a fundraising website. This money is currently used to make the final product and obtain the patent.

Bishop's father proudly states that he works for his son, that he fills his emails, answers his phone calls and takes him to his meetings with the lawyer.

While parents are waiting for the day when they can finally take advantage of this safety device, what can be done in the meantime to prevent such tragedies of child deaths?

Precautions to be taken by parents

Watch before locking: Make a habit of checking the back seat every time you get out of the car before locking the door, even if you are not carrying your child. Doing this every time will instill the habit.

First take your children out of the car and then, you can take care of going out shopping, etc., from the car.

When shopping, do not leave your child in a car. Even if it's only a few minutes, a car can quickly heat up, especially on a hot, sunny day.

Keep your car locked and your keys out of reach so that children can not get into the car alone.

If a child has disappeared, in addition to checking the backyard and other areas, be sure to check inside the car and trunk for cars nearby.

Leave the car running and the air conditioning will not make your child safer. The child could be removed, or start the car. Everything can happen. So prudence is in order.

If you come across an incident where someone left their children in a car:
  • Call the police or emergencies immediately.
  • Use your judgment, if the child is in obvious distress, get him out of the car as soon as possible.
  • The police could tell you to break the window.

Parents are not perfect and mistakes can occur. However, it is never acceptable to leave children alone in a car. Taking precautions is essential. Feel free to share this article to warn parents against this accident that can occur at any time!
